On the brink of mainland Europe, the choice of affordable and exciting holiday destinations knows no bounds and deciding where to spend your summer holiday can be a tough choice. More often than not, the likes of sunny Spain, captivating Cyprus and the glorious Algarve take center stage but there are of course many other European countries that will aptly fit the bill and sublime Slovenia is a very worthy contender indeed.
For a summer city break, the perfectly petite capital city of Ljubljana is a winning choice, particularly for the rich culture, interesting attractions, and beautiful architecture to be seen. A visit here will see you step back in history at Ljubljana Castle, learn plenty at the city’s numerous museums and perhaps pick up some bargains at the central market which spans the banks of the river. Tivoli Park is the prime location for a summer’s day offering a buzz of activity and Tivoli Castle can be visited within the grounds.
Although the second largest city in the country, Maribor bestows a small town feel which is filled with historical gems, it is equally worth a visit. The city, nestled amongst rolling vineyards fed by the Drava River, is the home of a living 400 year old vine which maintains its title as the oldest vine in the world. As such, the city is certainly a top pick for wine lovers! Those with no time for the wine will still find themselves enthralled with Maribor however as the terme baths, affluent shopping opportunities, city parks and of course the attractive, historical buildings will be sure to capture your interest.
Renowned for its expanse of stunning landscapes the outdoors plays a major role in holidays to Slovenia, whatever the time of year. A trip during the summer months is a true treat however, when the deep ravines, crystal clear lakes and triumphant mountain ranges really come to life and provide endless opportunities for outdoor excitement and adventure. A day spent exploring idyllic Lake Bled using car hire in Slovenia will leave picture perfect snapshots imprinted in your memory for years to come.
Those who yearn for time at the beach will find solace in Slovenia too. The coastline is by no means expansive but they often say the best things come in small packages. Hailed as the Dubrovnik of Slovenia, the coastal town of Piran, speckled with red roofs and white washed houses, comes up top for beauty and the clear oceans are a haven for underwater life making it an ideal location to take the plunge. For simple sun bathing and swimming, Fiesa Beach, overlooked by waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood, is an ideal choice.
For a well-rounded holiday, travel around using car hire Slovenia and experience a little bit of everything; soak up some culture in the capital, relax on the golden sands and get your heart pumping with a hike through Soca Valley. A trip to Slovenia is sure to be one summer holiday that you won’t forget any time soon!
